Dear Parents,
Hello, my name is Jenna Raber, and I am thrilled to have your son or daughter in our class this year! Transition students (ages 18-22 years) are a great age to teach. I am passionate about making education, learning social skills, and participating in vocational activities relevant for students at Metro School. I enjoy teaching skills that can help to develop skills students will use at home, in the community, and the work force.
I received my B.A. in Speech Pathology & Audiology, with a Certificate in Sign Language, in 2000. In 2005, I earned my B.S. in Intervention Specialist for Moderate/Intensive Educational Needs, and began my career in teaching. In 2010, I earned my M.S. in Education: Principalship. I joined the Metro Team in 2013, and I have enjoyed every minute with our amazing students and staff! Our classroom staff includes our Teaching Assistants Joanna Slawon and Pete Sharpe. We make a wonderful team, and I am looking forward to working with them again this year.
About Mrs. Joanna:
Joanna joined Metro School in 2014. We have worked in the same class since she came to CMS.
About Mr. Pete:
Pete began at Metro School in 2015. He has worked in our classroom since he started at CMS.
Classroom Priorities:
1. Academics-We use a variety of teaching strategies in order to help students use their critical thinking skills and problem solving skills in the classroom and in the community.
2. Communication-we offer Alternative Augmentative Communication (i.e. picture symbols, tactile cues, switches with verbal output, Ipad apps) as part of the total communication approach. This provides the best opportunities for students to understand the lesson, and expressively/receptively communicate with others, during lessons and throughout the school environment.
3. Mobility-we assist our students in learning to help staff/parents transfer to different equipment (i.e. standers, adapted chairs) whenever possible. We encourage students to be as independent as possible during transfers, while walking, when reaching for items, etc.
